Flight planning is the process of producing a flight plan to describe a proposed aircraft flight. It involves two safety-critical aspects: fuel calculation, to ensure that the aircraft can safely reach the destination, and compliance with air traffic control requirements, to minimise the risk of midair collision. In addition, flight planners normally wish to minimise flight cost through the appropriate choice of route, height, and speed, and by loading the minimum necessary fuel

(a) Fuel to fly to an ETOPS Alternate Airport. (1) Fuel to account for rapid decompression and engine failure. The airplane must carry the greater of the following amounts of fuel: (i) Fuel sufficient to fly to an ETOPS Alternate Airport assuming a rapid decompression at the most critical point followed by descent to a safe altitude in compliance with the oxygen supply requirements of § 135.157;

To plan an ETOPS-180 flight, the ETOPS segment must be covered by 180 minute circles to suitable alternate airports. That is really all that's required, but in addition the planner can create overlapping circles to better distribute ETP's. A planner such as PFPX greatly simplifies this process. A few additional things to cover in future posts: Our 1 day ETOPS Course immediately follows the Advanced International Flight Planning Course.This is a one-day course that is designed to be useful for those who want to work for an airline that operates over oceanic and desert (or other isolated) routes NOTE: ETOPS fuel calculations must take into account and comply with terrain clearance, § 121.191, and oxygen requirements contained in §§ 121.329 and 121.333.
