In our reading and thinking on salutogenesis we have changed the River into a different and more salutogenic framework placing Health in the River of Life. Here the main flow of the river is in the direction of life while illness, disease and risks are seen as disruptive forces one Antonovsky used a river of life metaphor to clarify his vision of salutogenesis as a theory to guide health promotion. From this perspective, health should be attended to as a dynamic , ever-present relation between the swimmer and the river. The river as a metaphor of health development has often been used. According to Antonovsky, it is not enough to promote health by avoiding stress or by building bridges keeping people from falling into the river. Instead people have to learn to swim (Antonovsky 1987). This paper presenting the Salutogenesis in the context of health promotion research uses a new analogue of a river, ‘Health in the River of Life’, developed by the authors. Bringing forth the illustration of the river of life and the bias of the downstream focus that was debated at the time, Antonovsky wanted to educate doctors who devoted their energies to prevent people from being pushed into the river, rather than pulling them out at the downstream end. Over time, however, Antonovsky’ s perspective on stress and health developed, and he came to acknowledge that there are no people on the river banks—all are in the river, as all are exposed to stressors From the River of Health to the River of Life In the salutogenic approach we focus on the direction towards health. The ultimate objective of health promotion activities is to facilitate prerequisites for a good life.

He further stated that as there is no ‘magic bullet’ (Antonovsky, 1979 p.8) to climbing out of the river, we should foster a SoC as we may need to learn to live with a new stage of our lives at any time. 2014-06-05 Antonovsky (1987:90) describes salutogenesis in a metaphor: [M]y fundamental philosophical assumption is that the river is the stream of life. None walks the shore safely. Moreover, it is clear to me that much of the river is polluted, literally and figuratively.
